Health Care Policy Expert Builds Community the United Way

As a professor in the School of Business Administration, Steven G. Ullmann propels students on their career paths. As a nationally recognized expert in health care policies, Ullmann provides strategic advice and insights on the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly changing industry. And as a donor to United Way of Miami-Dade County for the past 35 years, he is building a stronger and more vibrant community.

"Through the years, I have encouraged others in our University community to donate to United Way at whatever level they can. Even a few dollars can make a big difference in the lives of those in need."

“There are so many individuals and families in South Florida who need assistance,” Ullmann says. “In addition to directing some of our giving to the University, my wife Rhonwyn and I believe in financially supporting  the United Way’s nonprofit organizations that are trying to fill those essential needs, including food banks for the hungry, health care for children, and  services for those with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities.”

A native of San Francisco, Ullmann taught at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before joining the University of Miami faculty in 1979. Nearly 30 years later, he was honored with the UM President’s Medal for his contributions to the University.

Today, he is director of programs in Health Sector Management and Policy at the School of Business Administration, which will host its third premier health care conference, “The Business of Health Care: Bending the Cost Curve,” on January 17. He also has faculty appointments in the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.

“When Rhonwyn and I came here, we were completing our studies with very limited financial means, yet we shared a common belief in the importance of giving,” says Ullmann, who gives to the University and the community through monthly United Way contributions. “Through the years, I have encouraged others in our University community to donate to United Way at whatever level they can. Even a few dollars can make a big difference in the lives of those in need.”
