A magnificent gift to create a magnetic new student center in the heart of the Coral Gables campus is the largest student affairs donation ever to the University

If any gift in the University of Miami’s history will prove to be transformational for students, it is the gift from Tracey and Bruce Berkowitz to help build a new Student Activities Center on the University’s Coral Gables campus. Scheduled for completion in 2013, the center will feature gathering places, programming space, an organizations suite, retail outlets, and a new Rathskeller, giving UM a much-needed complex to support student life and accommodate the growing number of student organizations on campus.

The Berkowitzes’ lead gift, made through their charitable Fairholme Foundation, is the largest student affairs donation ever to the University and is also helping to make possible the renovation of the four-decades-old Whitten University Center.

“It is Fairholme Foundation’s honor to help maintain the fantastic momentum of the University of Miami’s prestigious growth under the leadership of President Shalala,” said Tracey and Bruce Berkowitz, parents of three Miami Hurricanes.

Tracey, a UM trustee, and Bruce are longtime benefactors of various programs at the University of Miami, including Athletics, The Launch Pad, and the Parents Fund. They have also provided substantial support over the years to the Miller School of Medicine, fortifying lifesaving programs at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and University of Miami Hospital and in the area of Executive Medicine.
